  • Forthcoming EU Institutional Changes
2009 is a turning point in the EU calendar with a new European Parliament (EP) and a new Commission

  • Key Changes of Lisbon Treaty
The Lisbon Treaty, signed in December 2007, is intended to replace the EU Constitution which was rejected in French and Dutch referenda in 2005. The main objective is to update European treaties to make decision-making smoother following enlargement, but it also addresses elements of the EU’s democratic deficit and other perceived organisational faults. Although the Treaty was rejected by Irish voters in June 2008, ratification has continued in other countries and a second Irish referendum is due by October 2009.
